05/22 Day of Unity and Walk of Unity
The central idea for this one-year anniversary (Tuesday, May 22nd) is for our citizens, families, neighbors and volunteers alike to return to that part of Joplin where they were one year ago. Not to relive the moments of that day, but rather to reunite with each other where neighborhoods stood. The hope is to reconnect with each other, with friends, emergency responders, folks from nearby communities or possibly those individuals who we may have met for the first time a year ago or in the days of recovery that followed.
A core group of community leaders, volunteers, clergy and citizens will leave the south parking lot of the 15th Street Walmart at 2:30 p.m. on a 3.7 mile walk across Joplin. This walk against the wind will pass through some of the most devastated portions of our community and conclude at Cunningham Park on the city’s west side. Anyone interested in joining in is encouraged to be a part of the entire walk or join in for that part of the route that passes closest to your neighborhood or where you were on that fateful day.
Four scheduled, themed stops along the walk route are planned:
The first being at 22nd and Indiana where, during a nondenominational service in front of the LDS Joplin Center, the steeple will be raised atop their new worship center; a symbolic moment for the faith that keeps us strong.
A second stop at 22nd and Iowa (in the area of the existing H.S. baseball field) will be a groundbreaking for the new Joplin High School; a significant symbol of our future through our youth.
The third stop will be at 25th & Wall where Irving Elementary School stood where an several children activities will be available from 2:00 to 5:00; the many butterfly stories of hope and rescue are symbolic of the innocence lost one year ago.
The final stop of the walk, prior to Cunningham Park will be on the south side of the intersection of 26th & Bird where the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce will conduct a grand-re-opening ribbon cutting for Kraft Insurance; though a single business on this date, 433 re-openings of the 545 businesses destroyed or severely damaged have been reopened since last May.
Upon arriving near Cunningham Park walkers with be led into the park ceremoniously by bag pipes and drum to the area near Memorial Fountain. Formal events will take place between 5:15 and 6:00 p.m. These events are still being finalized but will include the dedication of a bronze plaque and the planting of the final tree, both in memory of the 161 lives lost on May 22, 2011. A moment of silence will be observed at 5:41 p.m. Complete details will be released 1 week prior to the anniversary.
